Rachel beats Darren to win the round.
Another day of light winds, but fun racing nonetheless. Rachel won the last 2 races to beat a consistent Darren and defending champion Ken.

John dominates in the light winds.
John sailed without fault to record two wins from 2 races, hounded by Glen on his Lechner.
John with his new Severne RB9.5/Equipe2 |
Last Saturday was a pleasant enough day, though with a rather murky sky, which probably stopped the wind developing into anything more than a wafting breeze. Quite a few sailors had a warm-up sail, testing gear and settings, and probably had the best of the light east to nor’easterly.
At 1.45 Glen conducted the briefing for the willing 17 sailors present. Nick set a course and he and Ian conducted a line start using the ducky – from the line across near the southern shore up to the north east jetty cardinal, on port, down to a central buoy, on starboard, reaching to a buoy closer to the club, on port, then back to the start buoy, on port; 2 laps for the first heat and one lap for the second.
It was a bit of a shock to discover the water level was down almost half a metre from last week, bringing us closer to the slimy weed on the bottom. On the leg to the top mark it was hard to keep the centreboard down because of the shallow water and weed. It was definitely not a day to be using Formula boards. Nevertheless, everyone worked very hard and there was some very close racing, as usual. We thought Glen and Ben would easily succeed on their Lechners, but John’s skill and fitness got him to the front in both races. The wind was light and abating, with some knocks just to make it tricky. Glen’s results are below. Thanks to Trish for recording and to Ange for taking photos for us.

Ken's consistency wins
Who would have thought that we
would have such a beautiful and enjoyable afternoon after the atrocious
conditions of the morning. Driving along Picton Road it was a bit dreary and the
road was wet, but as we came over Mt Ousley we entered cloud and rain and there
was no view except murk. We were listening to Wave FM and all the talk was about
road closures and accidents and flash flooding and closed sports grounds, due to
100 mls of rain, and we had thoughts of turning around and going home! Berkeley
field was under several inches of water. As we came over the last rise on
Northcliffe Drive we joined a small queue of traffic which was negotiating the
flooded road in front of the Club.
And there was Ken, who had been
sitting in his car reading a book since 9! (Glen, Ben, Neil, Nick and Mike were at the Formula event at Huskisson.) Then along came Al W, the
cloud started to clear and the mirror disappeared off the lake due to a tiny
sou'westerly which slowly turned around to the east and north east. The storm
water drain just west of the car park was spewing out brown water and rubbish
and we watched this float around on the surface for the rest of the day. At
least we weren't sailing so fast we couldn't steer around the various bits of
wood, bottles, etc. One by one the male Demols arrived (I guess Rachel was
studying for the HSC - we wish her the best!) and we rigged up in warm sunshine.
John took control and set a course
using the cones and cardinals - out to the green cone, on port, up to the north
east (jetty) cardinal on starboard, down to the centre cardinal on starboard
then home - a one lap race, followed by a two lap race, then another one lap
race. I guess the wind was 5 to 10 knots, sort of nor'easterly with a few
easterly twitches. Glen had sent the handicaps to Al. There was a lot of keen
racing - well done to Anthony who completed his first series of races; Peter was
flying; John was pumping; Ken and I had some tussles (literally - sorry Ken; and
thanks for making me have to pump - not!) But it was all very enjoyable. Many
thanks to Josh for recording!

Anibal and Rachel tie for the win in SPR2
Two fantastic club races held in moderate NE winds with formula boards and raceboards going head to head. Well done to returning champ Anibal carving out a win with his new Tushingham XR 9.5 sail and an excellent result to Rachel sailing on her new F2 World Cup Race raceboard.
Also making its racing debut was Al McM's Exocet Elite 380 complete with a 9.5m XO sail, John's Mistral Equipe II raceboard, and Ben's 9.7m Severne ReflexII sail and Darren's XO 9.5m sail.
The first race was a scratch race with handicaps added to elapsed times to determine corrected times. The second race was a beach start with handicaps calculated from the first race.

Reigning champion, John, stamps his mark with a win.
On a day with some great westerly winds John chose a raceboard with a 9m sail while others were on slalom boards with 6.5m sails to record a dominate win in the first club championship of the year.
